Chris Holmes 7mm Narrow Gauge Rolling Stock
The Peckett “Gamecock” saddle tank is one of the early pre-production kits – before general release by Wrightlines – that I put together for Russell Wright. I have still to finish my one! The choice of buffers (TR type) and safety valve / dome are Russell’s. After a few false starts, trying to use a Tenshodo “Spud” unit (Right W.B. and wheel diameter) I ended up using a Wrightlines chassis and Romford wheels. It ran very well when sent off to Russell – haven’t heard any more about it.
Locomotive Richard and the red coach are built from one of the old Gakken kits for a model of the first train in Japan. The loco has a homebrewed 4-4-0 chassis, using Romford wheels & gears with an ECM motor, it also has a couple of diodes placed in circuit with the motor to stop it creeping when the controller is “Off”! The footplate, dummy outside frames and smoke box are all plasticard. Now about 37 years old.
The coach is mounted on a set of Peco “Wonderful wagon” W iron / axlebox (sprung) units, but is other wise much as Gakken intended apart from one window panel filled in on the Brake compartment.
The van is a scratch plastic Southwold Railway effort – there are also two SR open wagons – running on a cast whitemetal (4mm) wagon underframe (I had three) that happened to be a very good match for the drawing.
The station is “Nearly Hulme End” – it is only about 75% the length and depth of the original, so some of the windows are reduced width – one section instead of two. Built in plastic – the corrugated roofing is Wills 4mm corrugated asbestos, just right for 7mm wiggly tin. It won me a prize at the 7mm NGA AGM competition in 2001 – when it was new!
