An early Festiniog Railway Quarry Workers' Coach. MM7.
by S.L. Baker.
During the working life of the Festiniog Railway there were three types of quarrymen's coach. The earliest type consisted of open 4-wheeled carriages, little more than wagons, in fact, being later fitted with overall roofs. The second type, illustrated, was similar to the earliest one and held about 12 workers. Vehicles of the last type, however, were more like normal passenger carriages and are illustrated on both the Festiniog Railway Society's drawing, and on one by our member Dave Bradwell, commonly known to one and all as Northern Dave.
The author has a model of the carriage illustrated. This model has a cardboard body, a wooden roof covered in tissue, and a metal underframe. The wheels and axleboxes are by Colin Binnie, while the buffers will shortly be available through the Society - a few are available even now if any member needs them urgently. Models of this type of coach are very easy to produce and are ideal for production in batches of half a dozen or so.
