Dave P's Mogul. May 2020.
Some photos of yesterday evening’s outing of my Bassett Lowke 0 gauge steam mogul.
I had one of these years ago which had been built from a kit, but it was a lousy performer which struggled to drag itself round the track emitting wet gurgling noises. I lost interest in 0 gauge steam and sold it on.
Last year saw a rekindling of the old 0 gauge flame [Thanks to John Brittain] and I bought a BR BL mogul from John Sutton who assured me that Mike Darby had tested it and pronounced it was a good runner. As many of you know they are meths fired pot boilers with a vapourising burner and no shielding and so will only run well indoors or outside on a warm calm day.
I bit the bullet this week and as yesterday evening was warm and calm I got the engine out and finally ran it.
It raced round light engine so I hooked on two Hornby LMS coaches with heavy steel wheels which it romped away with.
I eventually got the hang of the cab roof regulator reverser and eased it back so that it ran steadily to just make it over the summit at Higher Buxton.
I was delighted with the brilliant run until the meths ran out after about 15-20 minutes. The only problem was on one point as the BL wheels have 27mm back to back. The photos are not brilliant as the light was dwindling, but it means you can see the glow from the meths.
Another milestone on the AVR.
Happy steaming
